At Mountain View high school there is a ELO club of activities. Every Friday, students pick a club that they want to participate in. There is a big debate about which activity is the most favorite; along with which ones should be added next semester. You get to pick which club you are in and can choose it with friends. Although, a bunch of kids don’t go to some activities because they are boring. “Gardening is the worst club activity,” one student reports. “I hate board games,” states another. “Reading is the most boring,” argues the last.
Club activities are important to the students because it helps them have fun and build a friendship with others. It lets students become more social and have fun. Most of the activities are made fun by the people in the club. One student claims, “I like any club as long as I’m with my friends”. While some students prefer more active activities, “I like the activities that include sports” and “Playing basketball is the best activity” report two students.
Nonetheless, kids want more activities added to the clubs. I also think there should be more activities added because the more activities there are, the more kids will want to come. When I asked students about what clubs they wanted, the responses had a wide range. “I want to have a football activity next semester”. “Soccer would be cool next semester”. “I would like dodgeball in the clubs”. “Nerf gun wars would be fun”. “Baking would be a learning experience and fun activity”.
Keeping students entertained and active in our schools is really important. As author Vince Gowman says, “Children have a full time occupation. It’s called Play, let them be occupied by it from their early years until their twilight years”.
