Many sign up for college classes in high school to get a head start, and one college class has stood out for its workload, claiming: “The typical student should also expect to spend 10-14 hours on ‘Homework/Independent Tasks.” Knowing that, many students still sign up for the class every year. In this newsletter, 3 students were interviewed about their college biology class and how they managed it. Before school started, they were asked what they thought about the class.
¨I joined the class to build my medical knowledge. I’ve always wanted to be a paramedic.”- Lia Fun-Choik
“I’ve always loved biology, and I consider it a passion of mine, so I thought I’d join to see if I am capable of creating a career out of this.”- Cheng Deng
Many students say they want to pursue a goal or earn college credit in the class, but what would they say about the class during its busiest time of the semester?
“Everything was so fast-paced with so many things to learn each week, it felt like trying to scoop water out of a sinking ship with a bucket.”-Cheng Deng
“I wouldn’t have passed if it weren’t for the tools available.”- Joseph Brady Moro
Though the class was unsurprisingly stressful and fast-paced, we asked the students how they felt about the class when they finished. The expected reactions and answers were: “it’s too hard,” “I hate it,” and “too much work.”
“Though it was hard and very busy, my knowledge in biology was challenged, but it was a great experience”- Cheng Deng
“I hated how much work there was and it made me realize I hate biology.” Tristan McCrary
The teacher of this high school college class was asked, ” How was teaching this class?” “Why is there so much work compared to other college classes?”
“I love it, I used to teach the same labs at csu and teaching the subject is what made me fall in love with teaching , the hardest part is knowing the students are unfamiliar with the subject, I also try to make it harder for the students too. students know it’s hard but I’d rather push you in this highschool so you wouldn’t lose when the stakes are high and crumble under the stress of multiple college classes at once.”- S.C. Culligan
The idea of college can be stressful, but having college courses available allows people to get a feel of what college is like.
