In our deeper dive into each fall sport, Lion Pride Times is continuing this series with MVHS Lions Boys Tennis.
Tennis is a very complex sport to look at when you take into consideration that it is both an individual and a team sport. The leader of the MVHS tennis team is currently Jaxon Bear, who has a record of 3-8, followed by Benson Chen with a 1-9 record. The tennis team has maintained a positive attitude about this season and its future direction. “I’m feeling pretty good about this season so far. Many of us have made great improvements in our playing, we have had a lot of strong plays and games, and it’s been fun overall,” said Joshua Nierman, 12.
Nierman is not the only one who continues to keep his head up during this season, but the team as a whole. “I am feeling great this season, huge growth among everyone, especially with the new guys,” said Benson Chen, 10.
Although the team’s attitude remains positive, the remainder of the season appears to contain difficulty, as far as the schedule is concerned. “Our last match is coming up on October 2, so our season is pretty much over besides regionals. Lately, our team has been getting more points and wins, so I’m hoping the trend continues for these last few games. I’m looking forward to regionals, which is going to be lots of fun,” said Jaxon Bear 12.
Even considering there have been wins or losses this season, the team still has some promising opportunities to make the most of this season. “Best moment of the season was when Jaxon and I won the match against Wellington,” said Chen. “The best moment of the season was stopping at Baskin Robbins Windsor,” said Nierman.
The seniors will take the court for the last time on October 2nd, where they hope to secure their final win of their career. None of these seniors chose to continue tennis in college, and they continue to enjoy the time that they were given to play the game that they love.
