In our deeper dive into each fall sport, Lion Pride Times is continuing this series with MVHS Lions Boys soccer.
The boys team has had a rough start to the season, currently having a 0-5 record. There are still positives to be taken from the season, and there is hope, even though they have not seen success so far this year. “It’s been a hard start due to scheduling and our performances. We have underperformed as a team so far, but hopefully we can pull it together soon,” said Captain Tyler Campbell 12.
Campbell is not the only one noticing that the season has not started as well as they would have liked. “To be honest, we’re getting off to a slow start. However, I don’t think it’s indicative of how we will finish the season. We’re getting better with every practice and game,” said Captain Levi Blair.
The next match up for these gentlemen is Tuesday, 09/16/2025, where they will take on Riverdale Ridge High School at Riverdale. “I think it will be hard and we will have to work for the rest of our season, but I think if our form improves, we can pull it back together,” said Campbell. “We have a lot of issues to work through, but I still believe that the season is going to end well if we’re able to improve our style of play in the formation we use,” said Blair. Last year, the Lions suffered a loss to Riverdale, losing 0-1.
Though the season has been rough, there are still good moments to take from the losses that have occurred this season. “The best moment, in my opinion, was when one of our strikers, Xavier Felix, scored against Fort Morgan. It was the first goal we scored this season, and it gave us a real chance in that game,” said Blair. Some of the best moments haven’t just come out of games but out of practices. “I think for me it’s every day at practice being with the team and watching everyone work to be better for themselves and the team,” said Campbell.
Even though they have had a losing record in the last two seasons, both seasons ended 4-11 overall and 2-6 in their league. These gentlemen have returned to soccer year after year. “I’ve never really had a reason or a why, I think I just love to compete and show myself that I’m the best,” said Campbell. “I play soccer because I was brought up from a young age with it. It’s basically the main sport that my dad raised me to like and I’ve played since I was little,” said Blair.
Both Blair and Campbell are on the same page when it comes to what they are looking forward to this year. “I’m excited for the last game, win or lose, it will be an emotional game, and I wanna leave everything on the field,” said Campbell. “I’m really looking forward to our Senior Night game, we have two very talented Senior players who deserve to be placed in the spotlight for their hard work,” said Blair. Even if every game is a loss, they are still looking forward to the rest of the season.
